
I Was Never Very Good at Accepting “That's Just How It Is.”
I have always been interested in what happens beneath the surface. Biology led me to physiology. Geology taught me to think about environment and exposure. Nutrition led me into metabolism, deficiencies, digestion and cellular function. Public health widened the lens again and made me ask how our surroundings, medications, food supply, environmental exposures and healthcare systems shape health over time.
That is still how I approach health today. I don't see the body as a collection of isolated organs or symptoms. I see interconnected systems constantly responding to chemistry, nutrients, hormones, microorganisms, medications, stress, environment and time.
What I Look At Differently
Most health problems do not begin with a single dramatic event. They develop through dozens of smaller changes that accumulate over time. A medication alters one biochemical pathway. A nutrient becomes depleted. Digestion becomes less efficient. An environmental exposure adds another burden. Sleep deteriorates. Mitochondria produce less energy. The microbiome shifts. Eventually, symptoms appear.

I want to understand the physiology behind a symptom rather than stopping at the name given to it.
Patterns Over Pieces
One laboratory value rarely tells the whole story. I look for relationships between systems, exposures, symptoms and changes over time.
Questions Before Assumptions
Whether I'm investigating a medication, an environmental exposure or a change in physiology, I keep asking: what is happening downstream, and what else might be connected?
Why Pure Alternatives Exists
Pure Alternatives is where everything I have learned about biology, nutrition, environmental health and functional medicine comes together—not only in what I write, but in the work I do with people who are trying to understand what is happening in their own bodies.
My consulting work is highly individualized. I look at the whole picture: symptoms, history, medications, nutrition, environmental exposures, lifestyle, existing laboratory results and, when useful, functional testing. Then I look for the patterns and connections that may have been missed when each problem was considered separately.
I especially enjoy the complicated cases—the person with a long list of symptoms, a drawer full of supplements, years of laboratory results and no coherent explanation for why they still don't feel well. Those are the cases that make me want to dig deeper.
Pure Alternatives gives me a place to do both sides of that work: investigate complex health questions with individuals and share what I learn so that others can better understand their own biology.

Beyond the Prescription
One area I am particularly interested in is what happens beyond a medication's intended effect. A drug may successfully change the pathway it was designed to target, but biological pathways do not operate in isolation.
My Beyond the Prescription work examines pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of action, nutrient effects, downstream physiology and the adaptations that can occur when a biological system is altered repeatedly over time.
The question isn't simply, “Does this medication work?” It is also, “What else is it changing?”
Keep Asking Better Questions
If there is one idea I hope readers take away from Pure Alternatives, it is this: your biology is interconnected, constantly adapting and usually more interesting than a symptom list makes it appear.
I intend to keep following the questions wherever the evidence leads.
