Glandular Supplements vs. Peptides: Two Different Approaches to Supporting the Body

Glandular Supplements vs. Peptides: Two Different Approaches to Supporting the Body

Much of today's attention is focused on peptides. From GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic to compounds like BPC-157 and MOTS-c, peptides have become one of the fastest-growing areas of interest in health, wellness, performance, and longevity.

Yet long before peptides became a popular topic, practitioners were using another category of products that remains largely overlooked today: glandular supplements.

Although these two approaches are often discussed separately, both are based on the idea that specific tissues and signaling molecules may influence how the body functions. The difference lies in how they attempt to provide support.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that function as signaling molecules within the body. They help cells communicate and influence processes such as metabolism, appetite, tissue repair, inflammation, immune function, and hormone activity.

Interest in peptide therapy has exploded because researchers continue to investigate peptides for weight management, healthy aging, exercise recovery, metabolic health, and numerous other applications.

Peptides are often highly targeted. They are designed to influence specific pathways or biological signals within the body.

This precision is one reason they have generated so much excitement.

What Are Glandular Supplements?

Glandular supplements take a very different approach. Typically derived from animal organs and tissues such as thyroid, adrenal, liver, pancreas, thymus, ovary, or testicular tissue, glandular supplements have been used for generations by physicians, naturopaths, and nutrition-oriented practitioners.

Rather than providing a specific signal, glandular supplements provide a complex mixture of naturally occurring compounds found within the tissue itself.

Depending on the source material, these may include proteins, enzymes, peptides, cofactors, minerals, phospholipids, nucleoproteins, and other tissue-specific constituents.

Historically, glandular products were often used before synthetic hormones and modern pharmaceuticals became widely available.

Two Very Different Philosophies

Although peptides and glandular supplements are sometimes discussed together, they represent two distinctly different philosophies.

Peptides generally seek to influence a specific biological pathway. They are targeted, precise, and designed to affect particular signals within the body.

Glandular supplements are broader in nature. Rather than focusing on a single signal, they provide the body with a wide range of naturally occurring components from a specific tissue.

One approach attempts to influence communication.

The other attempts to provide nourishment.

This distinction is important because it shapes expectations. Peptides are often discussed in terms of measurable physiological effects. Glandular supplements are more commonly viewed through a nutritional or tissue-support perspective.

There are several reasons peptides have gained attention. Many people are looking for alternatives to traditional pharmaceutical approaches. Others are interested in healthy aging, body composition, exercise recovery, metabolic health, or cognitive performance.

GLP-1 medications have introduced millions of people to the concept of peptide therapy. As a result, peptides have moved from a relatively specialized area of medicine into mainstream conversation.

Why Some Practitioners Continue to Use Glandular Supplements

Despite the attention given to newer therapies, glandular supplements never completely disappeared. In fact, many practitioners continued using them throughout the rise of functional medicine, integrative medicine, and nutritional therapy, including me.

One reason is that glandulars align with a whole-food philosophy of support. Rather than isolating a single compound, they provide a broad spectrum of tissue-derived constituents that occur naturally within the source organ.

Another reason is simply clinical experience.

What Does the Research Say?

The modern research landscape differs significantly between peptides and glandular supplements.

Peptide research continues to expand rapidly, attracting substantial scientific and commercial interest.

Glandular supplements, on the other hand, have received far less modern research attention. Much of their use is based on historical practice, practitioner observation, and traditional nutritional approaches rather than large-scale clinical trials.

This does not necessarily prove or disprove their value. It simply reflects the fact that research funding tends to follow newer technologies and patentable compounds.

My Perspective

Despite all the recent attention surrounding peptides, I never stopped using glandular supplements.

That does not mean I view them as superior to peptides, nor do I believe they are appropriate for every individual or every situation.

What interests me is that they represent a very different way of thinking about support.

Peptides are designed to influence specific biological signals. Glandular supplements provide a broader collection of naturally occurring tissue constituents.

Both approaches have their supporters.

As with many topics in health care, the question is rarely whether something is universally good or bad. The more important question is whether a particular approach makes sense for a particular person at a particular time.

For that reason, I view glandular supplements and peptides not as competing therapies, but as different tools based on different philosophies of support.

Looking Beyond Individual Supplements?

Whether the conversation is about peptides, glandular supplements, herbs, nutrients, or testing, the most important question is often not which product to take, but what underlying patterns may be influencing how your body is functioning.

Many people spend years trying different supplements without understanding the factors affecting their energy, recovery, resilience, and overall health. Identifying those patterns can provide a clearer direction for what support may make the most sense.
