Living Under Stress: A Truck Driver’s Perspective

I spent 36 years driving a truck. Out there on the road, you learn quickly to predict what everyone else is going to do next—cars cutting you off, drivers slamming on brakes, the works. Your mind runs a billion miles a second for 10 to 14 hours straight, and when you finally park for the night, the thoughts don’t stop. Sleep feels impossible because your body is still wired.

That’s nearly four decades of ultra-high stress. No surprise then that the average life expectancy for truck drivers is only around 61 years, compared to 76–79 years for most Americans. That’s a 15–20 year gap and I’m determined to beat it.

Why Stress is a Silent Killer

Stress sneaks in quietly. Tight shoulders, racing thoughts, pounding heart—it’s your body’s fight-or-flight response on repeat, driven by stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones, when chronically elevated, wreak havoc—spiking blood pressure, triggering inflammation, and straining the cardiovascular system, which weaken the heart and blood vessels over time. Persistent high cortisol levels also disrupt sleep, impair immune function, and increase the risk of anxiety and depression, creating a vicious cycle of physical and mental wear.

The good news is you don’t always need a prescription to fight back. Your body already has natural tools to calm itself down, you just have to learn how to use them.

Breathing for Heart Health

One of the simplest tools is your breath. Slow, deep breathing tells your nervous system it’s safe to relax. Just five minutes of intentional breathing can lower your heart rate and pull you out of stress mode. Methods like the Wim Hof technique have exploded in popularity, showing powerful effects on reducing stress, improving sleep, and boosting overall well-being.

Meditation That Actually Works

Meditation doesn’t have to mean incense and temples. It can be as simple as sitting quietly for ten minutes, closing your eyes, and watching your breath. Thoughts will come and go—let them pass without chasing. Even this basic mindfulness practice has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve overall cardiovascular function.

When I need to quiet the noise, I use a mental trick: I imagine I have no past, no future, and no present. That thought helps me fall asleep in less than 10 minutes.

Movement That Heals

Gentle movement practices like yoga or Tai Chi combine breathing with relaxation. They’re low impact, great for circulation, and give the mind a daily reset. Personally, I’ve found value in DDPY, created by wrestler Diamond Dallas Page after breaking his back. His program ranges from bed-ridden beginners to extreme athletes, and it’s helped thousands reclaim their health.

Grounding: The Earth Connection

Sometimes the best medicine is stepping outside. Walking barefoot in the grass, touching the soil, or lying directly on the ground connects your body to the Earth’s natural energy. Early research suggests grounding may improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and balance the nervous system.

Even if you can’t get to a forest, just being near greenery—a tree on your street or a houseplant—has been shown to lower stress hormones and calm the heart.

The Power of Gratitude

Never underestimate gratitude. Writing down a few things you’re thankful for each night literally changes your body chemistry. It shifts you out of stress and into repair mode. I practice this daily—from my first step out of bed to the moment I switch off the lights, I make it a point to be thankful. Research agrees: gratitude lowers stress, improves sleep, and strengthens emotional resilience.

Fueling Your Heart Right

Calming your mind is powerful, but your heart also needs the right fuel. Clean nutrition is the foundation, but the truth is most people don’t get all the vitamins and minerals they need from food alone. Smart supplementation can fill the gaps and keep your cardiovascular system running strong.
